![]() Little data is available at very high temperatures and pressures, such as supercritical conditions. ![]() Gaseous ammonia turns to the colourless liquid which boils at −33.1 ☌ (−27.58 ☏), and freezes to colourless crystals at −77.7 ☌ (−107.86 ☏). It is easily liquefied due to the strong hydrogen bonding between molecules. It is lighter than air, its density being 0.589 times that of air. Substances containing ammonia, or those that are similar to it, are called ammoniacal.Īmmonia is a colourless gas with a characteristically pungent smell. Īmmonia is also found throughout the Solar System on Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, among other places: on smaller, icy bodies such as Pluto, ammonia can act as a geologically important antifreeze, as a mixture of water and ammonia can have a melting point as low as −100 ☌ (−148 ☏ 173 K) if the ammonia concentration is high enough and thus allow such bodies to retain internal oceans and active geology at a far lower temperature than would be possible with water alone. Crystals of ammonium bicarbonate have been found in Patagonia guano. Ammonia and ammonium salts are also found in small quantities in rainwater, whereas ammonium chloride ( sal ammoniac), and ammonium sulfate are found in volcanic districts. Natural occurrence Īmmonia is a chemical found in trace quantities on Earth, being produced from nitrogenous animal and vegetable matter. Joseph Priestley noticed that when this salt reacted with lime, a vapor was released, which he termed as Ammonia. This white crystalline salt was called "salt of Ammon" ( sal ammoniac). Roman visitors to oracle temple of Amun in Siwa oasis collected a white crystalline material from the ceiling and walls caused by various pollutants. In any case, that salt ultimately gave ammonia and ammonium compounds their name. ![]() According to Herbert Hoover's commentary in his English translation of Georgius Agricola's De re metallica, it is likely to have been common sea salt. However, the description Pliny gives of the salt does not conform to the properties of ammonium chloride. ![]() Pliny, in Book XXXI of his Natural History, refers to a salt named hammoniacum, so called because of its proximity to the nearby Temple of Jupiter Amun ( Greek Ἄμμων Ammon) in the Roman province of Cyrenaica. The concentration of such solutions is measured in units of the Baumé scale ( density), with 26 degrees Baumé (about 30% of ammonia by weight at 15.5 ☌ or 59.9 ☏) being the typical high-concentration commercial product. Household ammonia or ammonium hydroxide is a solution of NH 3 in water. NH 3 boils at −33.34 ☌ (−28.012 ☏) at a pressure of one atmosphere, so the liquid must be stored under pressure or at low temperature. The Haber process that enabled industrial production was invented at the beginning of the 20th century, revolutionizing agriculture. įor fundamental reasons, the production of ammonia from the elements hydrogen and nitrogen is difficult, requiring high pressures and high temperatures. Industrial ammonia is sold either as ammonia liquor (usually 28% ammonia in water) or as pressurized or refrigerated anhydrous liquid ammonia transported in tank cars or cylinders. The global industrial production of ammonia in 2021 was 235 million tonnes. In many countries it is classified as an extremely hazardous substance, and is subject to strict reporting requirements by facilities that produce, store, or use it in significant quantities. It is mainly collected by downward displacement of both air and water.Īlthough common in nature-both terrestrially and in the outer planets of the Solar System-and in wide use, ammonia is both caustic and hazardous in its concentrated form. Ammonia in pure form is also applied directly into the soil.Īmmonia, either directly or indirectly, is also a building block for the synthesis of many pharmaceutical products and is used in many commercial cleaning products. Around 70% of ammonia is used to make fertilisers in various forms and composition, such as urea and diammonium phosphate. Biologically, it is a common nitrogenous waste, particularly among aquatic organisms, and it contributes significantly to the nutritional needs of terrestrial organisms by serving as a precursor to 45% of the world's food and fertilizers. A stable binary hydride, and the simplest pnictogen hydride, ammonia is a colourless gas with a distinct pungent smell. Ammonia is an inorganic compound of nitrogen and hydrogen with the formula N H 3. ![]() So we could grant them some artistic liberties for the name. I can still imagine that the critrole crew wanted it to mean "voice machine", and for the "deus ex machina" reference this order fits better. In English we could also say: "the shirt that is blue", but you would be wrong to conclude that it means that adjective comes after noun in English when putting them next to each other. Your example is "maquina de voz" which is a way to bypass the general rule because you put "de" in between the words. So "vox machina" would be translated to Spanish as "voz maquina" which still means machine voice. You are correct that in Spanish, adjective generally also follows noun, just as in Latin. If you would change these things, you would change the meaning of the sentences, which is exactly not what you want to happen when translating.

Tomb Raider opens in theaters on March 16, 2018.įeatured image: Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft in Tomb Raider. ![]() Tomb Raider was written by by Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Captain Marvel), and joining Vikander and Goggins are Dominic West and Daniel Wu in major roles. Lara Croft, the fiercely independent daughter of a missing adventurer, must push herself beyond her limits when she finds herself on the island where her father disappeared. “I was amazed by what she went through,” says co-star Dominic West. Performing a lot of her stunts, and undergoing hypothermia-level cold after being blasted by water cannons, Vikander plunged into the role of Croft with a verve that astounded her co-stars. Starring in her own action-adventure franchise is not beyond her acting abilities, but it required an incredible amount of physical work. Vikander has already proven she’s a nimble performer, she was ravishing and heartbreaking in The Danish Girl, and beguiling and intimdiating as the humanoid robot Ava in Ex Machina. It involved an intense workout regiment to turn the lithe actress into the tough-as-nails Tomb Raider, prompting co-star Walter Goggins to feel embarrassed to take his shirt off. Angelina Jolie is an Academy Award-winning actress who rose to fame after her role in Girl, Interrupted (1999), playing the title role in the 'Lara Croft' blockbuster movies, as well as Mr. But the focus of the featurette is Vikander’s transformation into Croft. There are a lot of real locations and real stunts, which will give Croft’s swashbuckling exploits a truly exotic, credible sheen. One of the things that has us excited for Uthaug’s Tomb Raider, aside from Vikander, is captured in this featurette. Eschewing the path her father had wanted for her, Croft goes off in search of his last-known destination, a mysterious tomb on an even more mysterious island off the coast of Japan. Before Tomb Raider’ s time at MGM, Angelina Jolie starred in two features based on the character and released by Paramount: Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The. Let’s take a look at some examples of masking: Anything in between (all shades of grey) will become gradually transparent, with corresponding effects on the object beneath. The part of an object with black fill or border will block any part of the object beneath it.The part of an object with white fill or border will allow the object beneath to be visible. This means you can crop images with feathered edges or translucent areas. HOWEVER, masking allows for gradients and blurs to modify the cropping in special ways. Like clipping, you can use masking with shapes, objects, and paths, like so: Masking works in a way very similar to clipping, but with some important advantages.įirst, access the tool in Object > Mask> Set : Now, you can go to Object > Clip > Set to crop your image: Remember that you can also sculpt the nodes of the path for even more precision: The more patient your are, the more precise the crop. One way to do this is to use the Pen Tool (or any drawing tool, such as Pencil) to carefully draw around the shape you wish to crop. Instead of shapes, you can also create your own path in order to crop in Inkscape. In addition, you can use multiple shapes or paths for cropping images in Inkscape. You can even use a vector object, such as text: The image is now cropped according to the shapes you use to clip (in this case, a square): ![]() Now, go to Object > Clip > Set to apply clipping and crop the image. Note that the clipping shape or object always goes on top of the image to be clipped. Next, place the shape on top of the image in the area you wish to crop, and select both the image and shape, like so: You can use squares, circles, stars, or any other shape). To clip an image (assuming you’ve imported your image to Inkscape), first create the shape you’ll be using to clip or “cut” your image. This first method for cropping images allows you to cut out a shape using Inkscape.īy creating geometric shapes and then clipping your image, you can easily cut out any shape you want on a jpeg or any other raster file, including circular, rectangular, triangular, and elliptical shapes. With clipping, you can crop in Inkscape by using regular shapes, objects such as text, or paths. It’s like using a cookie cutter to create a cookie from dough. ![]() The clip operation in Inkscape lets you place a vector shape, object or path on top of an image in order to “clip” or cut a portion of that image according to the shape used. This cultural exegesis explains exactly why the “deep demon” is viewed as an angel of light, a refusal to be victimised any longer. This approach allows us to sit in the emotional space, rather than leap to give a solution. Not by minimizing abuse, but by maximising it beyond even what secular justice seekers advocate. He took the very issue of abuse, that critics claim is Christianity’s weak point in the forgiveness debate, turning it on its head in the process. No spoilers here, but his unpacking of the story of Rachel Denhollander, the US gymnast – and Christian – who was abused by her coach along with hundreds of other young girls, is confronting. He was not afraid to sit and let us stew a little. That was Keller’s great strength in a post-Christian age. He had a pastoral heart that went to the 90 per cent of the iceberg under the tip. Forgive and forget right? That’s been the church’s schtick for centuries and we’re not gonna take it anymore! Keller totally got that tension. In the #MeToo age, the church’s message of forgiveness is viewed as both a mask for power, and a convenient “get-out-of-jail-free” card” waved by abusers. He reminded us that the “should” of forgiveness is now often seen as an impediment to mental, social and spiritual health in individuals and in society more widely. While many of us dabble around the edges, he plunges into the depths of the problem. It’s his cut-through that many of us are going to miss the most. “Keller had a pastoral heart that went to the 90 per cent of the iceberg under the tip.”Īs a cultural exegete par excellence, Keller deftly, and in a manner that is accessible to the layperson, unpacked why the “should” of forgiveness has drained away. The air we breathe, as Glen Scrivener’s wonderful book so vividly reminds us, is still Christian, but that air is getting thin. He could see how deeply ingrained the secular demon was. Perhaps it’s possible, but is it palatable? And he proffered good reason why this assumption no longer stands. Keller no longer assumed that people thought they should. ![]() It was this: “We all know we should forgive.” To which Keller’s riposte, in a more urbane, baritone, and yes – winsome – manner, was “Hold my beer!” One observation caught my eye in what was an otherwise solid piece of writing. In preparation for an evangelistic talk at a high school recently (I’d decided to speak on the same parable of Jesus’ that is the launchpad of the book, that of the unforgiving servant in Matthew 18:21-35), I googled some blogs on the topic. The subtitle of this book is the giveaway. Now they are non-Christian in a different way altogether a post-Christian way.Ī World That Sees Forgiveness as Unhealthy Previously they had been non-Christian in a decidedly “Christian” way. Or in other words, a world in which non-Christians are non-Christian in a different way to the way they used to be. ![]() Keller crafted a ministry in New York and around the world, on this premise, seeking to navigate a culture in which the demon is in even deeper than it was in the 1950s. This new-fangled cultural demon was in too deep to be drawn out by surface level engagement. The post-Christian setting already in London in the 1950s was such that the ordinary methods of Christian evangelism and apologetics were no longer as effective. ![]() Keller showed how Lloyd-Jones equated the depth of the problem with the equally abyss-like situation facing the church in the West. “The demon was in too deep,” says Lloyd-Jones. But first, Jesus shows that this is no ordinary demon. The good doctor, speaking in London in the 1950s preached about the demon-possessed child who had stymied the disciples’ exorcism attempts, and who Jesus ends up being the answer for. ![]() A Message for a Post-Christian WorldĪ well-known sermon by Keller, based on an equally well-known Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones’ sermon – The Demon Is In Too Deep – was his attempt to show how much things have changed in our culture. I am sure there is a rush on Keller’s books now that he has died, with people buying up a collection or two. In an era in which secular thinkers such as historian Tom Holland, and cultural commentator, Douglas Murray, worry about the loss of Christian virtues once taken for granted, this book seems a fitting final rejoinder to where we are going culturally.Īnd it does exactly what Tim Keller did for the bulk of his ministry: it infuses a deep gracious call for spiritual transformation in the midst of a confused and harsh culture. Perhaps it’s fitting that Tim Keller’s last book was Forgive: How Should I and How Can I? ![]() Pollen-associated tree nut allergy is often confined to local symptoms in the oral cavity, and it rarely leads to severe clinical reactions ( 15, 16). In Northern Europe, a birch pollen allergy-endemic area, cross-sensitivity between allergens in birch pollen (Bet v 1) and hazelnut (Cor a 1) is common ( 12– 14). Cross-sensitization occurs because of structural similarities between the immunoglobulin E (IgE)-binding epitopes in different allergens ( 10, 11). Eating habits and pollen exposure vary by geographical region, and therefore, regional differences in the allergic phenotype can be expected ( 5– 9). The worldwide prevalence of confirmed tree nut allergy ranges from 0 to 1.6% ( 4). Tree nuts are some of the most frequent triggers of allergy to plant foods ( 1– 3). These findings are consistent with a strong sIgE correlation between hazelnut and walnut and a close to total sIgE correlation between cashew and pistachio. There were two distinct and independent allergic phenotypes the majority of hazelnut allergic subjects were also allergic to walnut, and all but one subject with cashew allergy were dual allergic to pistachio. Clinical reactivity and the allergy patterns were to some extent reflected by sIgE levels and by correlations in sIgE between the nuts.Ĭonclusions: In this Northern European cohort, subjects with clinically relevant tree nut allergy were generally allergic to two or more tree nuts and close to half of them also to peanuts. OFC threshold levels were within the same range, but cashew was distinguished from other nuts by causing allergic symptoms at the lowest dose. Oral symptoms followed by a skin reaction were the most common symptomatology that lead to OFC cessation and subjects often presented with symptoms from two or more organ systems. Half of all assessed subjects were allergic to peanuts. Allergy to cashew was coincided in all but one of the assessed subjects with pistachio allergy. Hazelnut-walnut dual allergy was common but not exclusively observed as concomitant allergies. ![]() Results: Allergy to two or more tree nuts was observed in most cases. Clinical presentation and allergen-specific immunoglobulin E (sIgE) levels together with eliciting dose and rescue medication in OFCs were furthermore assessed. Methods: Forty tree nut allergic subjects were assessed for clinical reactivity to six nuts, i.e., hazelnut, walnut, pistachio, cashew, almond, and peanut, by OFCs or convincing medical history of an immediate allergic reaction or tolerance. ![]() Objective: This study aimed to investigate patterns of sensitization and clinical reactivity to tree nuts and peanuts and threshold levels for oral food challenges (OFCs) in a Danish cohort of tree nut allergic children, adolescents, and young adults.
